She did have incredible variety, but she never developed a good enough sense of when to play what shot. That was her downfall. However, she was definitely good enough to have won a tournament, and that big zero in her stat column leads people to underrate her game.

Anna should have won this match pretty easily (6-2 6-3) because she played really well and aggressive in the first set then ”much to my surprise” she slowed things down the match and she was hitting al lot of slices.
This gave Venus much needed time, then she took control of the match!
If only Anna played the second set like she did the first set flat and aggressive she would have won.
To bad… cause she was really talented and beautiful… unfortunately the beauty won from the talent :-(

She did not have everything. She WAS MENTALLY WEAK. Mental strength is more important than anything else.

WHY CAN’T THESE RUSSIAN COMMENTATORS SHUT UP FOR 1 SECOND ?

Anna had everything. She was one of the fastest, fittest athletes in the game, her groundstrokes were very flat and powerful, and she had great variety of shot and volleys. She hit double the winners of Venus in this match, that does not happen very often. For some reason people think that Kournikova wasn’t powerful, maybe because of her feminine appearance? She was one of the most aggressive players in the game.

anna is a very quiet player in this match compared to venus, every hit from venus comes with a ‘UHHH’. anna plays so well, it’s a shame she didn’t stick around. she would have been great looking at the wta then and the wta today. no hingis, graff, davenport etc to get in her way!

This day in age Anna probably could have won a few titles. She could definitely beat players like Wozniacki.

Kournikova’s two handed backhand slice is so lame, looks very awkward

  • By RebCha93, December 8, 2012 @ 5:26 pm

Venus was so annoying, Serena is a better girl.

  • By ICANDIGUOUT, December 8, 2012 @ 5:44 pm

I know!!!! I always thought if she’d won it, naturally, the ball would just keep rollin for her. Wins after more wins. But oh well. She still was an awesome player though. :)

  • By ICANDIGUOUT, December 8, 2012 @ 6:06 pm

she was. you’re right, she had an all court game but often she’d get frustrated and start spraying balls…playin faster. great comment.

always thought kournikova was actually under-rated as a player. she had the cerebral, all court game everyone praised hingis for. of course, winning majors helps, lol. still, i remember this tournament. for the row of players she beat just to make this final — seles, martinez, sanchez, davenport — using variety it showed she wasn’t as one-dimensional as people thought.

Ana fuistes una excelente tenista, llegastes al top 10 donde pocas llegan y ganas muchos titulos en dobles, fueras ganados grand islam en individuales si no te fueras distraido tanto

There are 1200 places on the WTA rankings. Most of those women have never won a WTA title either and there’s NOTHING pathetic or disgraceful about it.

its funny how kournikoba wins most of the points in the highlights but looses the match. lol

  • By JordanjamesX, December 8, 2012 @ 7:49 pm

@JonathanH051088 No you love Kournikova a lot of people find Anna to be a disgrace to women’s tennis. She NEVER won a damn WTA title how pathetic.

  • By dc3fan2003, December 8, 2012 @ 7:50 pm

the problem with Kournikova is she never improved. her game stayed the same while everyone around her got better and better (i.e. davenport, hingis, the williams sisters, clijsters and henin).

  • By dinh, December 8, 2012 @ 8:47 pm

Anna never looked more beautiful and her bh was killer!

  • By juju1305, December 8, 2012 @ 8:58 pm

@ajkh888 I agree. In the late 90s early 2000s, the top players of the 90s were still around, Seles, Novotna, Graf, Sanchez Vicario, Martinez, Pierce while new players had also established themselves as leaders on the tour, Hingis, Davenport, or were about to do so, the williamses. That definitely brought more density to the tour.

If only she ad won it…
