PETROVA SUFFER DEFEAT

Anna Kournikova’s countrywoman, Nadia Petrova, has been defeated in the opening round of the Rogers Cup by Kiki Bertens of Netherlands. The match was very interesting and both the players tried hard, but, the Dutch youngster maintained her composure throughout the game and defeated Petrova after a long struggle of 2 hours and 20 minutes. Bertens, who has been ranked 80th in the official rankings of WTA, won the match by 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-4.

In the first two games of the first set, both the players broke each other’s service and the scores were leveled at 1-1. Thereafter, Petrova got two consecutive breakthroughs in the third game and the fifth game and won the next three games in a row to make the score 4-1.

However, Bertens made a comeback and broke Petrova’s service in the sixth game. She then held her service in the next game and the score was 4-3. But, Petrova got a breakthrough in the ninth game and won the first set by 6-3, pleasing all the Russian fans who had had a bet at Bet Victor on Petrova to win the first set.

Petrova made a very good start in the second set as well. She got an early breakthrough in the second set and won the first three games consecutively to take a lead of 3-0. But, Bertens raised the bar at the right moment. She won four out of the next five games and leveled the score at 4-4. Both the players held their service in the next four games and the set went into the tie breaker. The Dutch youngster held her nerves to win the tie breaker and the second set. By this time, even I wasn’t feeling brave enough to have a bet with Bet Victor on which player would win it – it was THAT close!

In the third set, Bertens got a key breakthrough in the 10th game and she didn’t lose the advantage after that. She won the final set by 6-4 and pulled off a great upset. In the second round, Bertens will play against caroline Wozniacki of Denmark.
